While all of Abby’s book have some type of real world problem/health issue etc, this one was just beyond depressing and felt like a pile up of bad things happening. There was no lightness. The characters were barely together and much of their feelings were expressed via their own thoughts about missing eachother, rather than showing their connection either via time together or on the phone. It was all pining. What I love about Abby’s books are the chemistry and banter and this one doesn’t have much. Telling not showing.
I liked both of the characters very much, but I didn’t feel like they connected enough, there were no moments where you read it and your stomach flips over.
The real meat of the story was between Samantha and her family.
Also, there was less spice than normal even for an AJ book, which is fine but even without being graphic, there could have been way more smolder.
If you like Abby Jimenez, this is definitely worth reading. If it were my first introduction to her books, I don’t know that it would inspire me to read more.
