by Colleen Hoover, Publisher: Montlake
Colleen Hoover’s Reminders of Him tells the poignant story of Kenna Rowan, a young mother trying to rebuild her life after spending five years in prison. The novel is a heart-wrenching exploration of guilt, forgiveness, and second chances, written with Hoover’s signature emotional depth and sensitivity.
“Now that I’ve forgiven myself, the reminders of him only make me smile.“
One of the strengths of Reminders of Him is its ability to evoke strong emotions. Hoover creates a deeply flawed yet sympathetic protagonist in Kenna, whose journey to reconcile with her past and reconnect with her daughter tugs at the reader’s heartstrings. The alternating perspectives of Kenna and Ledger, a local bar owner with ties to Kenna’s past, add richness to the narrative, allowing the reader to see both sides of a complex situation.
However, the book’s reliance on emotional intensity can feel overwhelming at times. The constant emotional tension might make it hard for some readers to fully connect with the story, as there are few moments of lightness to balance the darker themes. Additionally, while Hoover handles Kenna’s struggle with guilt and redemption well, the romance between her and Ledger, though tender, feels a bit predictable and rushed at points.
“Her face is a work of art. I wish there was a picture of it hanging on a wall in a museum somewhere so I could stand in front of it and stare at it for as long as I wanted.“
That said, Reminders of Him is a compelling read for fans of emotional, character-driven stories. Hoover’s skill in portraying raw human emotions remains as strong as ever, making this book another powerful addition to her body of work. While the novel may not break new ground, it is a heartfelt and moving story about love, loss, and the painful yet rewarding journey of forgiveness.
